Essential Wilderness Survival and Backpacking Safety Information from a Veteran Traveler

An Outdoor Survival Guide Showing you What You Need to Know and Do

BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME

To my fellow Wilderness Backpacker
Tuesday, 10:28 a.m.
Dear Outdoor Adventurer,

IT'S TOO LATE TO GET PREPARATION RIGHT ONCE YOU'RE "OUT THERE"

If you and your group or companion say "NO" to all or any of these questions...
... you may benefit from what I'm about to say...

  • Are we all physically fit enough to safely go to the area we chose?

  • Do we have all the information & equipment we really need?

  • What can we share in order to cut down on backpack weight?

  • What permits (and/or visas) do we need beforehand?

  • What medical checkups, vaccinations & prescriptions are needed?

I’ve shared my travel knowledge and experiences of with lots of people and one comment I often get is “You should write a book!”

I dismissed the idea for over 20 years - after all, lots of people have written books about their travel experiences, why would mine be any better or different?

But then a friend got me really excited with the idea of combining my backpacking and other travel experiences with the survival and safety skills and information I've learned from other wilderness travel experts and enthusiasts.

Now THAT is Better, Different AND Worth Doing...

..Oh yes... and IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE!

I've had memorable travel experiences right across the range of the 5 basic needs:-

  • Air (or the lack of it)
  • Water (too much and too little)
  • Food (good and bad)
  • Shelter (the comfort and the discomfort)
  • Sex (all of the above)

I'm going to share what I've learned with you.

I actually CHOSE the itinerant life of a homeless person for about a year, so I can tell you with complete confidence that I've learned a lot about how to make the best of what is around me... And I'll Teach You the Techniques I Use.

I've also asked for, and read about other peoples' experiences, so I know for certain that you don't need to have actual experience in something to learn about it. I'll tell you how to Learn From Other People's Experience.

For example I have been on several advanced survival training courses, but that doesn't mean I have been in an actual survival situation.

Of course I would much rather travel with my "home" on my back, have my map and compass ready, and know my nice cozy sleeping bag is with me.

But because of my training, I CAN go out into the desert, navigate without a map or compass, day or night, carrying nothing but a plastic juice bottle for  water,  the clothes on my back and a small survival kit the size of a plastic soap container in my pocket...

I don't have to. and neither do you, but you should at least KNOW what to do if necessary.

I can teach you Strategies to Maximize Your Survival and Safety when You go Backpacking in the wilderness, which means you don't need previous experience... just your training!

The single biggest mistake you can make when thinking of going on a wilderness backpacking trip is
LACK OF PLANNING

“Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail”
…and if there’s one place you don’t want to fail it’s out where you are not necessarily at the top of the food chain!!

Of course, I can’t stress enough that you SHOULD go "out there", you should not be put off by possible problems, they may never happen and – in fact even by reading this, you are taking positive action to PREVENT as many problems & discomforts as possible.

Over-confidence in one's physical ability can lead to a member of your group going to a place that's too challenging for them.

Each of you needs to be training regularly in preparation for your trip as early as possible.

For example, this is how Muscle strain can affect you (and others) in the wild:-

- It can greatly detract from your own (and others')enjoyment
- You may not have the means to soothe or heal it in your backpack.
- It can mean that you don't make it to your camp/hut/shelter.

- The strain can develop into a torn muscle, a serious condition!

Inexperienced Wilderness Travelers typically don't learn enough  about the location they are visiting, which can lead to problems finding water & shelter, and getting back to civilization.

Here are just some of the things that could happen by not planning these important things:

- Not buying a map, then finding the path has been washed away.
- Forgetting to arrange transportation back to town after the trek.
- Loosing all your food to wildlife for want of a rope & pulley.

- Underestimating distance vs walking speed causes group stress.

Many newbies don't even know they NEED visas and/or permits, assuming that wilderness areas are free!

Here are just some of the things could stop or delay your trip if you ignored them in the planning stages:

- Arriving all ready to go, but all Visitor Passes are fully booked.
- In some foreign places the only "valid" pass is one paid at entry.
-
Arriving at a foreign airport and finding you needed a Visa to enter.
- Even passing briefly through a country may require a Visa.

You can completely RUIN a trip by leaving a vital piece of gear behind. Doing your final packing in the same room ensures nothing is duplicated - or left out.

Never assume someone else is carrying a vital piece of gear. You are likely to find that THEY thought YOU had it. If you don't discuss sharing weight and resources before you leave, it can lead to:

- Arguments among travelers already feeling stressed by the trek.
- Someone not being able to make it to the next stop.
-
Someone getting away with not carrying their fair share.
- Someone leaving something they thought someone else had.

Medical check-ups, Vaccinations & Prescriptions can  seem such an unnecessary & sometimes painful requirement, but they could well save your life.

Skip this bit and you're asking for trouble. Some of the consequences could be:-

- Discovering your allergy to over-the-counter pills on your trek.
- Getting a preventable illness or disease on your trek.
- Getting Giardia and not having any diarrhea control medication.

- Having to be evacuated due to forgetting your prescription meds.

Precious memories of your trek about should be about how much fun you had when you were out there, not about all the problems you had!

This Time Tested Wilderness Backpacking Safety and Survival Information Guide gives you all the "dirt", leaving you to enjoy a fun, exciting and safe wilderness adventure.

I’ve laid the information out a logical and easy to understand way so that if you feel you need to take some of the information with you, you can print the sections you think you may need in the wild.

In the e-Book:

"Time Tested Wilderness Backpacking Safety and Survival Information"

I'll present you with many of my own experiences and also those of people who have shared their stories with me.

In this e-Book you will learn everything you need to know to safely and successfully prepare for your backpacking adventure in the wilderness.

  • Section 1 - Deals exclusively with PREPARING - physically and mentally for your trip. I suggest you read this as far in advance as possible so that you are truly ready well beforehand... NOW would be good!
  • Section 2 - This is about PACKING. You have bought all the gear you need, now you need to fit it ALL into your backpack!... and when you've packed it the first time you need to know how to pack it again, and again and again (you get the idea)
  • Section 3 - Covers TRAVELLING - from the comfort of your home to the place you want to go backpacking and then into walking in the Wilderness. This covers what you need while walking, how to avoid injuries like blisters, as well as basic navigation and much more.
  • Section 4 - Is all about CAMPING. This covers everything you need to know from the moment you select a camp site to the moment you move on. (It's a BIG section - with all the gory/juicy bits)
  • Section 5 - I've dedicated this section to ENJOYMENT. Many a traveler has been so focused on getting things right they forgot to enjoy the journey. I suggest that you print and take this one with you so YOU don't forget.
  • Section 6 - Now we come to the JUST IN CASE section. This is where all the safety and survival information is. It's in a separate section so that you know about if you need it, but it's not part of your travel plans!

How Can Someone Else's Experience Benefit YOU?"

By Answering Questions You Haven't Even Thought of Yet!

You'll have all the right documents, insurance & check-ups etc.

  • You'll take extra money in case that entry pass you bought on the internet is lost or not valid at the gate. A piece of paper doesn't talk, money does.
  • You won't hesitate to minimize potential problems on the track because you'll see the benefits of visiting a Podiatrist & a Dentist before leaving home.
  • You'll leave photocopies of passports, itinerary & other important documents with someone back home so they know where you are likely to be and you know you can contact them if you need to.

    Breeze Through Packing:-

  • You'll minimize back and shoulder pain, overbalancing when on uneven ground or rock-hopping by practicing the best ways to distribute the weight in your backpack before you leave.
  • You will invest in that pack cover to protect your stuff from the weather, getting snagged on undergrowth (and slow down the nimble fingers of pickpockets)
  • You learn the importance of putting up your new tent several times before you leave home because you'll know that waiting until it's getting dark on day 1 will cause stress and unnecessary hassle.

Walking Basics Will Be Second Nature:-

  • You'll understand why it's safer to carry more water than you need in case you don't find any at your next rest stop or camping place.
  • You'll be able to show leadership by recognizing the potential seriousness of a bad headache in your group, assessing if it is a sign of dehydration, altitude sickness or a badly loaded backpack.
  • You'll know that blisters are worth stopping for because they won't get any better once they begin - even if it means getting to camp late or holding up the group.

Your Campsite will be Safe Because:-

  • You'll explain to the group why you'd never camp in a dry river bed. Yes, It looks comfy, but nobody knows if there's been rain upstream, so you'll choose the edge of a river bed to set up camp.
  • Everything that lives in the wilderness has been there longer than you, so you'll have to use your skills to stay at the top of the food chain by keeping them out of your food, bed, tent & campsite.
  • You'll know how important it is to minimize tension in your partner or group because you understand that there is danger when campers are thinking about their feelings and not their safety.

Your Trek will be filled with Fun because:-

  • You'll be the camp hero because you remembered to bring games and can suggest hundreds of games and activities to have fun with - you are only limited by your imagination!
  • You'll learn the joys of walking even when you tired or have blisters or we're not as fit as you thought because you understand how to ignore the discomforts you can't do anything about.
  • Show your group or partner ways to safely enjoy the wildlife you encounter without causing harm to them or yourselves by understanding the rules of nature and using common sense.

Know about those Wilderness Safety & Survival What Ifs:-

  • Because of your excellent preparation, you'll know the basics of what to do if you or someone in your group gets sick or hurt through your leadership and responsible attitude.
  • We all make mistakes, but what if you picked a wilderness area that is just too hard to complete, you'll use your training and judgment to make decisions to rectify mistakes.
  • You'll have the confidence to make informed decisions about unexpected circumstances - and act from a calm, rational base rather than energy sapping panic.
Make your trip last twice as long - include planning as being part of the fun!
